Funds raised support the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), a recognized world leader in cure-focused research.
Pioneering many of the techniques used in islet cell transplantation since the early 1970’s, the DRI has successfully
reversed diabetes in patients involved in ongoing clinical trials. The Institute’s research is now directed at improving
transplant processes and developing new biomedical technologies and cell-based therapies to restore insulin production.
To build upon and accelerate the progress toward a cure, the Institute
continually develops international research partnerships while serving as a
global resource and training center for investigators working in islet cell
research. Our new global federation of diabetes centers in Edmonton, Barcelona, Milan,
Palermo, Stockholm, Kyoto, and now 6 centers in Israel, have created a unique
opportunity for us to accelerate our research tremendously.
The most comprehensive diabetes research facility of its kind, the DRI conducts a broad range of scientific programs in the
rapidly evolving fields of pancreatic stem cell development, transplant immunology, molecular biology, genetic engineering
and regenerative medicine, among others, to speed the most promising findings from the lab to the patient.
Within its own community, the DRI is a Center of Excellence at the
University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, and serves as the
State of Florida’s Regional Diabetes Center, providing the latest in patient and
professional education, ensuring the highest standards of health care delivery.
Our Mission
To develop and rapidly apply the most promising research to treat and cure those now living with diabetes.
